Time is the hurdle. There are so many minutes to choose from: three minutes past four in the morning, or ten thirty-seven in the evening, or six minutes after lunch \u2013 although they prefer it if you haven\u2019t eaten.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re sticklers for sterility.<\/p>\n

When would best suit you? is the question they end the interview with, but you haven\u2019t made that decision.<\/p>\n

\u2018You\u2019re s\u2019posed to be prepared,\u2019 Sasha whispers, in the waiting room, after the door closes on their patient expressions. They\u2019ve given you an hour to decide, and the irony of those sixty minutes is enough to make you laugh, except laughing here would be incongruent with the d\u00e9cor.<\/p>\n

This is a dignified business.<\/p>\n

\u2018Have you changed your mind?\u2019 Sasha asks, scrutinising you.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a trace of horror in her eyes and you can almost finish her sentence: after all we\u2019ve been through. You don\u2019t begrudge her the thought. She\u2019s right; the planning has been arduous, although it will benefit her in the end.<\/p>\n

Touching her cheek, you say, \u2018Don\u2019t fret, my sweet,\u2019 and remember the exact minute when you first laid eyes on her. Two-twenty-five on a golden afternoon.<\/p>\n
