Quite a charming set, read together, as they were possibly intended to be read. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/450447?seq=2#page_scan_tab_contents\">Linda Anderson writes<\/a>, the mower of the poems &#8216;combines in his single figure the best and worst aspects of &#8220;the lunatic, the lover, and the poet,&#8221; incapable of conforming his desires to reality, but responding to the beauty of nature, desiring love and expressing his frustration poetically&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetrynook.com\/poem\/gardener-9\">Louis MacNeice&#8217;s &#8216;The Gardener&#8217;<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poetrymagazine\/browse?contentId=26394\">Hollis Summers&#8217;s &#8216;The Lawnmower&#8217;<\/a> (1954)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com.au\/books?id=0r1cQVdQ_rkC&amp;pg=PT46&amp;lpg=PT46&amp;dq=notes+from+a+suburban+heart+mona+van+duyn&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=AfS4rgCI0X&amp;sig=H4_6AjkYnbW9Iu9kBBdScBmMWhQ&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjZo5Lhje_UAhUGE7wKHX9YAl0Q6AEILzAD#v=onepage&amp;q=notes%20from%20a%20suburban%20heart%20mona%20van%20duyn&amp;f=false\">Mona Van Duyn&#8217;s &#8216;Notes From A Suburban Heart&#8217;<\/a>, from her collection <em>A Time of Bees <\/em>(1964)<\/li>\n<li>J H Prynne&#8217;s &#8216;Acquisition of Love&#8217;, which appeared in his collection\u00a0<em>The White Stones <\/em>(1968)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poems\/48423\/the-mower-56d229a740294\">Philip Larkin&#8217;s &#8216;The Mower&#8217;<\/a>, first published in the magazine\u00a0<em>Humberside <\/em>(1979)<\/li>\n<li>Charles Bukowski&#8217;s &#8216;Man Mowing the Lawn Across the Way From Me&#8217;, first published in the <em>New York Quarterly<\/em> in 1973. Or there&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poetrymagazine\/browse?contentId=25126\">Richard Wilbur&#8217;s &#8216;To An American Poet Just Dead&#8217;<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/1972\/06\/10\/the-beautiful-lawn-sprinkler\">Howard Nemerov&#8217;s &#8216;The Beautiful Lawn Sprinkler&#8217;<\/a> or &#8216;Suburban Prophecy&#8217;, or <a href=\"http:\/\/williamstaffordarchives.org\/images\/large\/Elegy.jpg\">William Stafford&#8217;s &#8216;Elegy&#8217;<\/a>) but these seem less of a kind to me. I was also reminded of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com.au\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0ahUKEwiftuywj-_UAhWDxLwKHWxZBMoQFggkMAA&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.poetrylibrary.edu.au%2Fpoets%2Fbeveridge-judith%2Fmy-neighbour-blowing-grassblades-0211001&amp;usg=AFQjCNG7xRgpeIKN2bgwKP2Om-idmmwfag\">Judith Beveridge&#8217;s beautiful &#8216;My Neighbour Blowing Grassblades&#8217; <\/a>when I asked some friends, recently, if they could help me find more examples by women and\/or non-white poets &#8212; not quite there (nor is her equally wondrous poem about peacocks on the lawn)&#8211; but well worth seeking out and reading.<\/p>\n<p>If you know of any other lawnmowing poems, I&#8217;d love to hear about them.
